As far as I remember, it is not so simple as selfish. More like... no choice. You probably noticed how inconceivable truth about "eye in the moon" and "moon breaking" was mentioned few times. That is simply, higher realm having eyes on this one and barrier between the two breaking. Pretty much invasion of higher realm and there is no one to stop that unless he attains power

Owww... I missed that in the initial setting. So he has a virtuous motivation, a reason for having to discard his "Humanity" (mortality?). What I still don't get in all these plots is why they always totally suck at explaining their predicament to their siblings? I mean, his father and brother seem totally oblivious to his motivations... And I still don't get the whole incident surrounding the sister that happened ten years ago. if i remember correctly from the motion manhua or whatever they are called everything should be explained along the lines.. also he is not a condescending prick.. he is just honest to a fault.. i kind of like his character, he never looks down on anyone, even stupid enemies and he even offers them free lessons on how to fix their cultivation and get stronger but he is always seen as an arrogant condescending prick but its because he doesnt really have common sense and social skills
